Mmmmm Black Forest Cake — that decadent rich German dessert that combines cherry, whipped cream and chocolate. Black Forest Cake is named after the specialty liquor (Schwarzwalder Kirschwasser) of the region of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) mountain range in southwestern Germany.

Some versions of this cake can get very complex, but we have a simple family recipe that honestly after these last couple of weeks, feels like just the comforting hug we need right now.

It calls for a boxed chocolate cake mix, a bag of mini chocolate chips, a can of cherry pie filling, and whipped topping. So simple! See below for how to put it all together. It takes no time at all. And it’s a great cooking project to get the kids involved in.

First, make cake mix as directed on the box. Mix the mini chocolate chips in before baking. You can use regular chocolate chips, but for some reason the mini chocolate chips add something special to this recipe. Set a few tablespoons of chocolate chips aside to use as garnish at the end. Bake as directed in two 8” round baking pans. Allow to cool completely. Remove cake from one of the baking pans and place on a cake plate. Spread half the cherry pie filling on top of the cake.

Spread half the whipped topping on top of the cherries.

Carefully place the other cake on top of the cake that has the cherries and whipped topping on top.

Spread whipped topping on top of that layer first. Then place individual cherries on top of the whipped topping. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips across the top.
